For players eager to dive into this new chapter, understanding how to access the DLC Shadow of the Erdtree in Elden Ring is essential. Unlike conventional expansions, it’s not available from a simple menu or prompt—you’ll need to meet specific in-game conditions first.

Prerequisites to Access the DLC

To begin your journey into the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, there are two major requirements every Tarnished must fulfill:

1. Defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood

This is the biggest gatekeeping requirement. Mohg is a demigod boss located in Mohgwyn Palace, a hidden region within the Siofra River area. There are two primary ways to reach him:

• Using the Pureblood Knight’s Medal: After progressing White Mask Varre’s questline (which begins at the First Step Site of Grace), you’ll receive this item. It teleports you straight to Mohgwyn Palace.

• Via the Consecrated Snowfield Portal: For players not pursuing Varre’s quest, a portal in the western part of the Consecrated Snowfield also leads to the palace. Note that this method requires both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion.

Once in Mohgwyn Palace, traverse the blood-drenched swamp and prepare for a difficult boss fight. Mohg is a serious challenge, especially if you're underleveled or unprepared for his bleed-heavy attacks.

2. Defeat Radahn (Optional but Recommended)

While not mandatory, defeating General Radahn ensures that you’re at the appropriate power level and have experienced key story events that enrich the narrative of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. Radahn’s defeat also enables access to Nokron, another critical late-game area.

Entering the DLC Realm

After Mohg falls, head to the cocoon in his boss arena. A new NPC-related interaction will be available—touching the withered arm extending from the cocoon is your ticket into the DLC Shadow of the Erdtree in Elden Ring.

If you've met all requirements and the DLC is installed, interacting with the cocoon will transport you into the new land, called the "Land of Shadow." This opens up a massive new region filled with fresh challenges, gear, and lore.

What Level Should You Be?

While there’s no official level gate, players are strongly advised to be at least level 120–150 before entering the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Enemies in the new realm are balanced around endgame stats and builds. Consider upgrading your weapons to +9 or +10 and fine-tuning your build before you dive in.

Tips Before Entering the DLC

• Upgrade your Flask Capacity and Charges: Explore for Sacred Tears and Golden Seeds to maximize your healing.

• Stockpile Runes: You'll likely burn through them quickly when experimenting with new gear or recovering from deaths in unfamiliar territory.

• Respec if Needed: Rennala at Raya Lucaria offers respecs using Larval Tears. A refined build can make a big difference in early DLC encounters.
